The Power of Giving And Serving

It’s the holiday season in 2020! This has been a tough year for so many people, and for a variety of reasons. Especially this year, we all WANT to be generous to those around us. In reality, we rather want to drown out the sea of confusion and negativity we’ve been immersed in this year! 

 

But in a year like this, some of us feel like we have nothing to give. So it’s not possible to be generous, right? Don’t you need to HAVE in order to GIVE? 

 

Actually, no. When you have nothing to give, the solution is generosity.

 

But how is that possible?

 

You see, generosity is paradoxical. The more you give, the more you receive. It’s a win-win! This paradox has been called many things: Sowing and Reaping, Karma, the Law of Attraction. But the principle is always the same. 

 

You GET back more than what you GIVE. 

 

And here is the key: You need to give FIRST. Generosity begets generosity. That is the power of giving. 

 

But what if you’re struggling? What if you and your business were affected negatively by Covid this year and you’re just trying to stay afloat? How can you still be generous? 

 

Here is a solution: Give what you can and what you have. This doesn’t need to be complicated. If you’re in a time of your life where you have little, give a little. It’s ok if for now it’s not much! 

 

Also, consider this: Every person on earth has the same amount of one thing. Time. Time is the great equalizer. Rich, poor, healthy, ill, young, or old, we all have 24 hours in a day. How are we spending it? Intentionally? Can we be generous with our time?

 

To use an analogy from above, those are tiny seeds to plant, but they produce something MUCH bigger in the long run!

 

What does all of this have to do with sales? Everything! Because you see, selling is a form of generosity. How so?

 

No business owner starts their business without a passion, a drive, or a purpose. Business is a form of generosity because we are sharing our area of expertise, our skills, and our knowledge. When we do this, we are being generous with what we have! 

 

And we are generous when we serve people!

 

Think about it: What better way is there to serve someone than to find a need that they have and meet it?

 

To see business as a form of generosity and service, we need to rethink selling! Selling isn’t telling. It’s not talking someone into something they don’t need. It’s not swindling them out of their hard-earned dollars for our benefit. 

 

Selling is learning about a person, finding what they need, and seeking to meet that need! Sales is service! And that is a powerful thing! 

 

I always say that someone is praying for what you have. You are the solution to their problem! Doesn’t it feel easier to sell when you know you are doing them – and yourself – a favor by doing so? 

 

See, serving means that you are showing someone – not just telling them – that they matter enough to you that you will invest time, energy and money in them. It means defining their needs, and then trying to meet them.

2021 is coming. And it’s bound to be a better year than 2020! How are you going to use the power of generosity and service this year?
