How to Harness the Law of Reverse Effort to Achieve your Goals

What if you could achieve your goals with little to no effort? What if you could get what you want in life without having to struggle? This may sound entirely too good to be true, but it’s actually possible thanks to Alan Watts’ law of reverse effort or the backwards law. I will discuss what the law of reverse effort is and how you can apply it in your own life for effortless success!

What is the law of reverse effort?

Watts’s law of reverse effort is a Universal Law that states “the more you try to do something, the less likely you are to succeed.” In other words, the harder you try to achieve something, the less likely you are actually going to achieve it. This may sound counterintuitive, but there’s actually a lot of truth to it.

How to Harness the Law of Reverse Effort to Achieve your Goals

The Law of Attraction

Let’s dig into the law of attraction. Like many, you may have heard about it first from ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne. This brought the word ‘manifesting’ mainstream. The law of attraction states that like attracts like. So, if you’re trying to attract something into your life (like success, money, or love), you need to first focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. Manifest. See, when you’re trying too hard to achieve something, you’re actually putting out an extremely low vibration of lack and desperation, which will only attract more lack and desperation. Who wants that in their life?

The Law of Reverse Effort vs. Force

Instead of trying to achieve your goals with force, try using the law of reverse effort. When you use the law of reverse effort, you focus on what you truly want and let go of the need to control the outcome. This doesn’t mean that you don’t put any effort into achieving your goals, but it does mean that you’re not attached to the outcome. You can think of it in this simple way: marry the process, divorce the results. I am not exactly sure who said this familiar statement, but it sure rings true here with this law.

Focus, visualization and letting go

Let’s say you want to land a new client. Instead of trying to force it, focus on what you want (a new client) and let go of the need to control the outcome. Visualize yourself with this new client and feel what it would be like to have them on your client list. Focus on the positive feelings associated with working with them, not on the lack of it.

When you let go of the need to control the outcome, you open yourself up to possibilities that you may not have considered before. You may find that the new client comes to you in a way that you never could have imagined. Or, you may not get the client, but you may find a client that is an even better fit.

The law of reverse effort is all about harnessing the power of intention and focus. When you focus on what you want and let go of the need to control the outcome, you open yourself up to limitless possibilities. So, the next time you’re feeling stuck or like you’re not making any progress towards your goals, remember the law of reverse effort and give it a try!
